How to Nourish & Not Overindulge: Feeling Your Best on Thanksgiving

Holidays bring so much deliciousness our way, and it’s easy to overindulge. Let’s shift that a little by filling up on things that keep our energy stable and our hearts full. Here are a few ways to nourish your body and still enjoy every bite without feeling like you need a nap afterward.

1. Start with a High-Protein, High-Fiber Breakfast

Kickstart your Thanksgiving morning with a breakfast that’s rich in protein and fiber. This will help stabilize your blood sugar, keep you full longer, and curb any impulse to overeat later. Aim for 40 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber.

Here are a few breakfast ideas to get you started:

  • Protein Smoothie Bowl: Blend unsweetened almond milk, spinach, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, and a scoop of collagen or vegan protein powder. Add berries and top with a handful of nuts for extra crunch.

  • Egg & Veggie Scramble: Sauté spinach, mushrooms, and onions, and add egg whites with a sprinkle of vegan feta. Serve with a slice of gluten-free whole-grain toast topped with almond butter.

  • Savory Breakfast Bowl: Combine cooked quinoa, black beans, and sautéed veggies. Top with 2 ounces of turkey sausage and avocado for healthy fats.

2. Stay Hydrated & Energized

Throughout the day, keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water. Add electrolytes and a drop of Solex Gold minerals for an extra boost. Staying hydrated also helps prevent overindulgence, as thirst can often be mistaken for hunger.

  1. Making Memories: Intentional & Fun Ways to Celebrate

Instead of letting the holiday breeze by in a blur of food and dishes, take a few moments to create lasting memories. Whether it's a cozy family tradition or a few minutes in nature, make Thanksgiving unforgettable in your own way.

  • Set Up a Gratitude Tree: Have each family member write what they’re grateful for on a paper leaf and hang it on a small branch or tree centerpiece.

  • Capture the Moments: Snap candid photos throughout the day, but don’t stress about perfection! It’s about capturing the love and laughter, not the “perfect shot.”

  • Bring Games to the Table: Keep a few fun table games handy—Thanksgiving trivia, conversation starters, or a quick family charades session are great ways to laugh and connect.

    4. For the Big Meal: Savor and Nourish

When it’s finally time for the Thanksgiving feast, go in with a game plan that includes all the goodies you love. Just make sure you’re getting a good serving of protein (30-40 grams) to keep your energy up and prevent blood sugar spikes. And let’s bring along a high-fiber side dish to balance out those comfort foods.

Here are three delicious gluten-free, high-fiber Thanksgiving side dishes to enjoy:

1. Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic & Walnuts

  • Ingredients: Brussels sprouts (halved), olive oil, minced garlic, chopped walnuts, salt, and pepper.

  • Instructions: Toss Brussels sprouts in olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Roast at 400°F for 25 minutes, adding walnuts in the last 5 minutes for a crunchy, fiber-rich side.

2. Sweet Potato & Kale Salad with Pecans

  • Ingredients: Roasted sweet potato cubes, chopped kale, pecans, dried cranberries, and a dressing made of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and a dash of maple syrup.

  • Instructions: Massage kale with a little olive oil and salt until tender. Toss with sweet potatoes, pecans, cranberries, and dressing for a colorful, high-fiber salad.

3. Cauliflower & Lentil Mash

  • Ingredients: Cauliflower florets, cooked lentils, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

  • Instructions: Boil cauliflower until soft, then blend with cooked lentils, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper for a mashed-potato alternative that’s rich in fiber and flavor.
