5 Top Tips to Manage Stress

It’s National Stress Awareness Day, and this is a great time to talk about stress.

Stress is real and it is a leading cause of disease, including heart disease, obesity, insomnia, hormonal imbalance, mental illness, etc.

Stress is real, and it can be debilitating.

The hope I bring you is that although it’s real, you can learn to manage it. It does take discipline and awareness and a change of lifestyle, but if you want it badly enough, you can manage it.

Here are my top 5 tips to manage stress:

  1. Eliminate or reduce caffeine. Caffeine is a drug of choice for many, and you may find yourself grabbing the coffee or the chocolate or the energy drinks when under severe stress, but this actually makes things worse. It can cause hormone imbalance, excess cortisol and adrenaline, heart palpitations, sleep reduction, and the high levels of acidity can cause disease. You most commonly see it in the form of adrenal fatigue, anxiety, depression, heartburn, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, etc.

  2. Unplug from electronics 2 hours before bed. Yes, turn off the social media, turn off the phone and laptop, begin to unwind, drink herbal tea, read a book, pray/meditate. Begin to quiet your mind, think of things you are grateful for, and practice mindfulness.

  3. Get up at least 15 minutes early and have a quiet morning routine. I personally get up 2 hours earlier so that I can also get movement in, but even 15 minutes to pray, meditate, worship, affirm, visualize will set your day up to successfully manage stress.

  4. Cut the sugar from your diet. GMO processed sugar and corn syrup are nothing more than a addictive stimulant that is used for food addiction to make money for big food corporations. What you get in return, is addiction, anxiety, inability to cope, brain fog, weight gain, hormonal imbalance, etc. Instead, opt for 1-2 servings of real fruit per day, and avoid sugar alcohols and sugar substitutes as well and hidden sugars in processed foods.

  5. Renew your mind. If you find yourself stressed, evaluate your thoughts. Are you thinking thoughts that are defeating, of despair, are anxiety inducing? Do you think things like, “I can’t..”? Stop those thoughts and create a new paradigm. Think about how you want things to be, how you want to feel, what you want. Remember, what you think about, you bring about.
